GREEN STUDIO

Green studio practices are always in the forefront of my thoughts.
I am very conscientious about what comes in and what goes out of my studio. I use found objects as a form a recycling.

I also save pieces of deconstructed work to be reused in new works.
Oils are beautiful and lovely to work with but very toxic as are many materials that artists use.
I have developed a simple system so that I can still paint with oils but not pour any of the residues or solvents down the drain.

Set up:
3 coffee cans with lids, one kitchen utensil drying holder, wire mesh or perforated tin can and sawdust.
I collect the sawdust from when I make stretcher bars and frames but you can purchase some if you don't do wood work.

Step 1:
Label cans; stage 1, stage 2 and solid waste

Step 2:
After a painting session, "wash" brushes in the stage 1 can of turpentine or similar solvent using the mesh device to help scrub clean.
When finished, pour the solvent into the stage 2 can. The solids will separate by the next day.

Step 3: At the next painting session, gently pour off the clean turpentine into your daily usage container or bowl.
Scrape the collected solids into the solid waste can to be mixed with the sawdust.
After you have accumulated enough, then you can safely dispose of the solids at a hazardous waste center or find some other creative use for it.

That's it. Green and simple.
